As the best women in the world prepare to compete on Royal Troon for the first time at this week’s AIG Women’s British Open, the R&A has announced a world-class list of venues for future championships from 2021 to 2025, including Muirfield.
Here’s the magnificent lineup:
- 2021 – Carnoustie
- 2022 – Muirfield
- 2023 – Walton Heath
- 2024 – St. Andrews
- 2025 – Royal Porthcawl
Muirfield, Walton Heath and Royal Porthcawl will be hosting the women’s major championship for the first time. Muirfield, which admitted 12 female members for the first time in its 275-year history last year, has hosted 16 men’s British Opens. In 1952 and 1984 it hosted the Curtis Cup and the Vagliano Trophy in 1963 and 1975. Walton Health has hosted the Ryder Cup, the Senior British Open and the British Masters.
“It’s a huge statement,” said Martin Slumbers, chief executive of The R&A of the Muirfield addition. “It’s a huge statement of their commitment to the game and their commitment to the women’s game. But the whole five years is intended to be a huge statement of intent about how we want to provide the platform for the best women golfers to play on some of the best golf courses that we can offer in GB&I. It’s a five-year run that really should whet the appetite of every great golf lover.”
