Golfers, caddies and staff adorned rainbow-colored ribbons at the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational Thursday in Memphis.
The added accessory is a tribute to Camilo Villegas’ daugther, Mia, who died Sunday after battling tumors on her brain and spine. She was 22 months old.
Villegas, 38, is a native of Colombia and has four wins on the PGA Tour in his career. He said last month scans in March revealed the diagnosis.
“She always went to the gym with me; it was one of our bonding spots,” Villegas told reporters in June. “She was always like a little monkey, climbing on everything. But then one day, I noticed she had not been climbing on anything. She had also been crying a little more than normal at night. She had been teething, so we took her to the pediatrician, thinking it was that.”
Among the golfers who teed off early Thursday with a rainbow ribbon attached to their caps were Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth, Tommy Fleetwood and Billy Horschel.
