Pro golfer Ryan Ruffels had a unique first season on the Korn Ferry Tour due to the pandemic.
Ruffels sat down on the “WHY YOU SUCK AT GOLF!” podcast to discuss what it was like as a rookie this year, his relationship with his star golfer sister, Gabriela, and what he would change about professional golf. Ruffels has played on multiple tours prior to the Korn Ferry Tour, and has been quite successful in his four years as a professional player.
In 2020 fashion, the Korn Ferry Tour suspended play when the coronavirus pandemic started to pick up, which left Ruffels at a crossroads in attempting to obtain his PGA Tour card. Tournaments resumed in June, and he claimed that he was exhausted by the end of the season because of the long stretch of consistent tournament play.
Ruffels played an exceptional round in Omaha, Nebraska, this year at the Pinnacle Bank Championship where he came up short of the win by a single shot. He led the tournament the first three days, and a single bogey, unfortunately, cost him the win.
“That took me a few days to get over because you work so hard and you get that close to really pushing your chances for a PGA Tour card even closer and for it to just come up short like that is a bit frustrating,” said Ruffels. “Obviously I was just shattered because I was basically there, I had one foot through the door and then just shut it on myself a bit.”
Ruffels’ sister, Gabriela, is also a sensational golfer. She is a member of the University of Southern California women’s golf team and is a winner of the U.S. Women’s Amateur in 2019 and was runner up this year. The siblings have a great relationship and a bit of rivalry.
“Anytime she gets on a run, I generally push myself a little bit harder just because I don’t want to be left behind. I don’t want to be the second-best Ruffels,” he said, jokingly.
Currently, Ruffels is using his off time to push himself in the gym daily and to take a breather to reset for 2021. He is working to start his career on the PGA Tour and is excited to see what that will look like for him when competition resumes.
